Choosing a binoculars can be a rather tricky task considering that there are so many kinds of binoculars out there. What do all these technical terms mean? Let’s find out.

Binoculars are great instruments that can enhance various activities such as hunting, bird watching, sports and even astronomy. In essence, a binocular takes a distant image, magnifies it through its lens, and presents that image for our viewing. All this is done while remaining small and compact enough to be carried around.

The actual architecture of most binoculars is fairly simple. The lenses positioned at the end of the barrel are often known as the objective lens. These lenses gather the light from a distant image and focus it on the lenses closest to your eyes for viewing. Binoculars are really just two mini telescopes set side by side so that viewing can be done with both eyes as opposed to just one. This helps to create a depth of field of the objects being observed a lot better than if it was a single scope.

When you choose a pair of binoculars, you’d find that there are usually two numbers used to describe them. These are often described as something like “10×50″ or something similar. Let’s translate this numbers to something more meaningful.

The first number simply refers to the magnification of the binoculars, or simply put, how many times the image is magnified. Hence, if this number is a 10, it means that the image you are seeing through the lens has been magnified 10 times its normal size.

The second number is related to the size of the objective lens at the end of the binoculars. This number is quite important to take note of because larger objective lens diameters mean that more light will be captured by the binoculars.

So how practical is all this information? Most people make the assumption that it’s best to get the highest magnification they can for their binoculars. This is not quite right. A hand-held binoculars at a high magnification tends to have too much movement for the highly-magnified image to be useful. Usually, binoculars that have anything more than 10 times magnification should be mounted on a tripod instead of being held. Hence, if you’re planning to use binoculars without a tripod, you should stay within the 4-8x magnification range.

We talked about the objective lens size of the binoculars earlier on. If the activity you plan on using your binoculars is a low light situation i.e at night or in a dimly lit situation, whether indoors or outdoors, then you’d need a larger objective lens for your binoculars. Generally speaking, 30mm and above is essential for low light situations, to ensure that you’re capturing as much light as possible.

The last thing you’d need to consider is the actual weight of the binoculars that you’re buying. For activities like hiking, or hunting, it’s probably best to acquire a pair of light weight binoculars. Plastic lenses, which weigh a lot less than their glass counterparts, may be the solution. The tradeoff is that glass lenses perform a lot better at the same cost, but are heavier and more fragile.

In summary, you’d need to consider which activities you’d most likely be using your binoculars in when choosing the right binoculars. The magnification and objective lens are key factors, but you may also consider getting water-proof ones depending on your needs. A more expensive pair of binoculars will generally be more robust and are able to withstand longer term use.

Using Satellite Photographs, Topographic Maps, Google Earth 3D For Feng Shui Research

Recently, I came across a software which allows me to access great deal of satellite photos. Then an idea comes to my mind, I can perform some research with these satellite photos. If we have access to topographic maps, aerial photographs, together with the use of satellite photos and maps, we will be to make a great deal of landform research without leaving our homes.

This software which gives me the access to satellite photographs is Google Earth 3D. Although it is a free software, it also provides paid premium services. As a start, the free version is good enough for me as it already allows me to access the satellite images of great deal of cities (New York, London, Beijing, Tokyo, Paris, Singapore, and alot more) and places. I can even locate the house I’m staying in with Google Earth 3D. With the software, we can also tilt and rotate the view to see 3D terrain and buildings, providing even more flexibility for the research.

Besides displaying these satellite photographs, Google Earth 3D also let us find the distances between places, which is another big plus.

We can perform research on things like incoming roads, incoming water, outgoing water, incoming mountains around the places of our interests. These satellite photographs should provide us with great deal of information and idea of the places before we personally going down to perform even more refine research. The terrain feature and the ability to zoom in and out also allow us to perform analysis from the town aspect, or even from the city aspect. We can trace the rivers which run over a great deal of distances, the great mountains which link to the smaller mountains. There is some much we can do with this free resource.

Today’s high tech resources have enable us to carry out even more research, and the access to these satellite photographs is definitely one of the fantastic resources out there.

The Timeline of the Telescope

It is actually quite easy to make a timeline with regards to the invention of the telescope as well as how it has evolved over the years. Much has been written about the telescope and good records have been kept with regards to new technologies and inventions. Basically, the telescope timeline looks something like this:

1609 – Galileo first invented the telescope. Though it was crude, it still did the trick and allowed him to look into space for the very first time other than with the ***** eye. Galileo’s telescope was a reflecting one causing light to bounce off a mirror when looked at through a lens.

Mid-1600’s – Johannes Keplar came up with the idea of a refracting telescope that would widen the field of view as well as improve the quality of the image. He did this by changing the shape and the placement of the lenses, but doing this caused little circles of color that would surround bright objects – chromatic aberration.

Late 1600’s – As the century began to draw to a close, telescope makers were realizing that with a bigger lens, you could see much more. With a bigger lens, the telescope had to be bigger to accommodate it. Eventually, telescopes were being built that we as long as a hundred feet!

It was at this point in the telescope timeline that Sir Isaac Newton began to change telescope lenses so that there would be no chromatic aberration. He also found a way to add mirrors to improve images without having to make the telescope longer. This appealed to people as Newton’s telescope was small but had the same power as the larger ones.

Mid-1800’s – The first photographic telescope is introduced. John William Draper found a way to focus the Moon’s image on a light-sensitive photographic plate. He used a clockwork device to keep the light in place even as the Earth rotated and the moon moved through the sky. After an exposure of 20 minutes, he had taken the first ever photograph of the moon! After the introduction of the photographic telescope came about, we were able to see the skies up close and personal. And what a great accomplishment!

The early timeline of telescopes shows that many advances were made even before we advanced into what we think of as modern times. Since the 1800’s, so many advancements were made in the field of producing telescopes that documenting each and every one would be able to fill up pages and pages of text.

Suffice it to say that now we are graced with telescopes that can see even the minutest parts of Saturn’s rings and even realize that Pluto is just a little too small to be a real planet. The timeline of telescopes will continue. All we have to do now is sit back, watch, and document the advancements.

Death, Spirit Possession & Mediums – Sometimes Souls Don’t go to The Light

We recently heard of a case where an eight year-old girl’s
aunt died of lung cancer and since the young girl was so
close to her aunt, she told everyone to call her by her aunt’s
name, insisted that her aunt’s clothes were hers, and began
stealing her father’s cigarettes (her aunt died of lung cancer
from smoking). At 33, the girl, now a woman, still likes
to go by her deceased aunt’s name. She asked us if it’s
possible she could be a medium for her deceased aunt. We
told her the following.

What you are likely experiencing is called spirit possession
or attachment. Instead of going to “the Light” when she died,
your Aunt (her soul) chose to stick around. Souls choose to
stay for various reasons, such as to watch over loved ones,
because they’re afraid of “hell” (especially common with those
personalities who were very religious), or to feed addictions.

Though she probably means well, at the very least, your Aunt
is draining your energy. We recommend reading “The Unquiet

subject and an interesting read. You’ll be surprised to learn

Moral of the story: Unless a seer is an expert in the area they
comment on, it’s best to be careful about what you accept from

What to look out for this month

January 6th – February 3rd, 2009

The energies of the directions will change and therefore we need to prepare and know what to expect!

This is a general overview. The Stars react differently based on the sitting and facing of your home so you should be aware of these directions.

For January 2009:

Southeast:

The number 5 star (a negative star) flies into the southeast bringing bad luck and illness. If you are residing in this sector -be careful with all decisions this month. And place some metal in this sector for the month.

South:

The 5 – 1 combination is one of water and earth which is not ideal – be careful if you are playing sports or in general guard against accidents. A medicine buddha or symbols of prosperity and victory will help here.

Southwest:

The 7-3 combination again is a difficult one and can cause concerns with arguments and fights so be careful with your words and actions if you reside in this sector. If this is your bedroom – add some blue (a blue rhinoceros is always auspicious) and focus on symbols of friendship and peace.

East:

A great combination for prosperity and success. If your office is located in this sector it will be a great month for business as your prospects increase! Great for students as well, a water feature and a dragon symbol will help boost this great energy this month.

Centre:

The 6 star brings good luck with it and this energy permeates throughout the house. Keep this energy alive with yang (lots of activity here) and lights!

West:

8 brings with it prosperity to those who reside here! A water feature would work well here, although keep children out of this area as this strong energy may cause them minor illness.

Northeast:

A great place to study for exams or to write your novel! Creativity is featured here this month! Also great for romance and family – Mandarin ducks, family portraits, mentor symbols and crystal points work well here.

North:

The 2 star is know for illness so be cautious (in particular men of the family) if you reside here. A wu lu beside your bedside (or other metal rounded sculpture) will help you keep healthy. However there is also career prospects here — so if you reside here, make sure your money frog is in place or any symbols of wealth and prosperity.

Northwest:

The 7 violent star combined with the 2 star is not good news. Be careful with burglary here – make sure you alarm system is up to date and doors and windows locked if this is your front door. Keep protection symbols in this area this month.

Remember these are only general guidelines and it is best to do a full audit of your home in order to benefit the most from the changing energies of the stars!

The new moon in Scorpio arrives on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 4:14pm PDT. This is not a new moon made for wimps. It probably the most powerful new moon for the entire year.

Humanity is evolving whether they like it or not and as we move to a more spiritually evolved society, old ways, systems that no longer work, and our own habits that no longer serve us well must leave. And that’s what this new moon is all about!

At the time of a new moon, the sun and moon occupy the same space of the zodiac sign. So the moon and the sun will be in Scorpio on Tuesday. It is a time for inner reflections, deep soul searching, and getting in touch with your ‘dark side’ or that part of yourself that you don’t like to recognize but is holding you back. It is also a day when you are tuned in to both the current reality and the invisible realm. (Is it any wonder this moon falls near Halloween?)

This moon also falls at a time of or after the harvest in many places symbolizing that life dies only to be reborn in the spring. Similarly, we must let old habits that no longer serve us die in order to manifest or bring about a rebirth of own making.

You are actually seeing the effects this upcoming moon reflected in the world monetary systems. This moon refuses to allow that which no longer works to continue!

This is why this moon is considered a ‘dark moon’ because it forces you to look at what is not working in your life in order to get it out! If you continue to leave dysfunction in your life now, circumstances will only get tougher until it forces you to listen.

So, take this time to reflect upon what’s not working in your life. If you’ve been thinking about changing careers or letting go of a situation or person that no longer brings you joy, then consider cutting it loose in the next several days.

Take time to meditate and get very clear about your goals and intentions – write it down or put it in a journal. Make a list of what you want to see happen in your life.

If you do this now, you will find that new paths will open over the course of the next few days and ensuing weeks. New opportunities for growth will appear where none existed. But this only promised for those who are not faint at heart and dare to embrace much needed change!

International Space Station (ISS) – A Link With Aboriginal History

I am fortunate to be living in a region of Australia with one of the richest Aboriginal cultures and a living history. North East Arnhem land in the Northern Territory is located at the confluence of the Arafura Sea and the Gulf of Carpenteria. As an Avid Astronomer I am always on the lookout for an opportunity to share the night sky with others. This day the two came together in a beautiful symmetry.

Sharing the delights of North East Arnhem land with Visitors is always a satisfying experience in it self. A crystal clear stream teaming with beautiful fish, bush land alive with the sound and movement of tropical birds and lunch shared with friends really sets the scene well.

Follow this up with a lazy afternoon on a white sandy beach cradled by Ochre red cliffs with a backdrop of Coastal Rain forest and you have to wonder can it get any better than this!

The final stop for the day was to be the open Coastal plain known as Macassans (local spelling) Beach. Fringed with Casuarina trees that seemed to sing in the wind, as the dry season sea breeze whistled through their pale green pine like leaves.

To put you in the picture, the Aboriginal people of NE Arnhemland are called the Yolngu People, The Language is Known as Yolngu Mata. Not all the words in their language originate from our shores though. The Makassan people of Sulawesi (now part of Indonesia) had been trading with the Yolngu people 200 years before Australia was even colonized by Europeans. The Makassan’s have had a material influence on the Yolngu People including the addition of many words to their already rich language.

I looked up (as you do often when you are an astronomer!) and there the IIS was, high overhead and bright as can be. The ISS was traveling from North West to South East and was as bright as the Planet Jupiter. It was only afterwards that I made the link with the Makassan people sailing on their annual trading journey to the Yolngu homelands in NE Arnhem land, coming from the northwest into the southeast . Just as the ISS had done before our eyes, high above the stone pictures of the arriving Makassan ships, laid down in the late 18th Century!

What a contrast the ISS is to the Makassan sailing ships of old that plied a trade with the Yolngu people 200 years before Europeans were even in this country, let alone flying through space.

Yet the similarities are still there, people of different races bought together through a knowledge of the stars. For surely the Makassan ’s must have navigated their way here by the position of the stars and the Yolngu people anticipated their arrival by their own celestial calendar. Just as the ISS brings people of all Nations together in the pursuit of Space Science, as we work out our own place in the universe. With ever more accurate distances plotted to stars in our galactic neighborhood and an insatiable desire to discover a habitable planet around another star.

The “Macassan” Pictures and the passage of the ISS was a real treat for everyone present and one that will be remembered for a long time to come. Keep looking up, you never know what you might see!

For centuries people, not only witches, have been using spells to bring about changes in their lives. Usually spell casting is seen as a long and complicated process with many components, such as chants, ingredients & planetary phases, for optimum results.

Have you ever thought about the colour of the food you eat? I have and I’d like to share this with you for according to Astrology the different signs respond to different colours. Let’s look at Aries for you need red food in your diet. Taureans: benefit from yellow food with Gemini’s, yellow coloured food. It can all become a little too much at time yet if you follow these simple instructions for a month or two you might see a difference. Cancerians benefit from green food in your diet with Leo’s responding to (what else) orange and yellow foods. Fussy little Virgo’s should consider yellow, green and blue food! Libran resonate with red and yellow food where Scorpio’s being energised by orange food and black foodstuffs. Moving right along we come to Sagittarius where yellow, green, red foodstuffs are found beneficial. Capricorn’s enjoy green food and Aquarians: blue food and white foods.     Hunting distant Ice Giants

    With the inner planets now gracing the morning rather than the early evening skies & Jupiter setting early in the evening, it is the ideal time to go hunting for slow moving Uranus & Neptune in their cold dark outer orbits. The timing is good, especially for viewing Uranus, with its current position being close to the Zenith (overhead) mid evening, in the constellation of Aquarius (the water bearer) & with Neptune not far away in Capricornius (the sea goat).

    Finding Uranus

    Uranus at Magnitude +5.9 will be just visible to the sharp eyed observer under clear dark skies (avoid moonlit nights and city lights) Neptune at Magnitude +7.9 on the other hand is almost twice as dim and cannot be seen with the ***** eye. A good pair of 10×50 binoculars will allow you to locate both of these planets, however a telescope will be needed to see any detail.

    Uranus (at 3 billion kilometers away) is in a good position to be found, located as it currently is about ½ way between the stars Phi Aquari & Lambda Aquari. These stars are close to the meridian (the central part of the sky) in the early evening soon after twilight.

    With a moderate sized telescope or greater (150mm or 6 inchs) you will be able to see the Blue dot that is Uranus. However you will need Approximately 150x magnification to see the small aquamarine disk of the planet & the same goes for Neptune.

    Unlike Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, there are no surface or cloud features to be seen unless you have a very large telescope and the season is right for storm formation on Uranus or Neptune.

    Finding Neptune

    Neptune (at 4.5 billion kilometers away) is a little harder to find, but once you have located the fainter but none the less distinctive triangle of Capricornius, locate the bright star (Magnitude 4.5) Iota Capricorni. Approximately 2 degrees (2 finger widths) away from this star and outside of the Triangle you will see the small deep blue disk of Neptune.

    Previously, astronomy wasn’t a science as much as it was an art and type of mysterious magic. But the stalwart men of science continued to look up into the night sky and consider the universe beyond the world upon which they stood. These were men such as Isaac Newton, who recognized that other stars are suns just like ours, Galileo who first used a telescope to gaze into the heavens, and even people as far back as Ptolemy who formulated the geocentric planetary system around 100 AD. Astronomy includes the entire universe as its subject – that’s incredibly huge. Thus an enthusiast has to decide the limits of their interest in the subject

    As large as the universe is, isn’t a constellation too specialized a subject? The constellations aren’t just mythical beings imagined by ancient people. Constellations are made up of a large number of interstellar objects like stars and galaxies. While we can’t see many stars in Pisces, we do see a very interesting galaxy. Galaxy NGC629, or M74, is a spiral galaxy like our own Milky Way, and we can see its facing side. To us it’s like an octopus reaching into space in all directions. That means we can tell it’s a spiral. We can’t just look up and see it, though. And through most amateur telescopes it would appear as little more than a blurry spot. But with a telescope of 12 inches aperture or more the spiral details will be visible.

    When Pisces was first seen the sun didn’t take the same important path through it that it now takes. Pisces (Aries specifically) sees the sun pass through it, over the equator, as it makes its way north. This is counted as the first day of spring in the Northern half of the world, the Vernal Equinox. Aries’ first point was some distance from Pisces when it was first drawn. But it has moved into Pisces over time. The drift of celestial objects as seen from Earth is called precession. The Earth and everything in the universe move. Our sun and our galaxy are moving at incredible speeds. The sun and solar system, for example, move at about 220 kilometers per second around the center of the galaxy. Since humans have kept records the solar system has traveled about 1/250th of a complete orbit. The entire galaxy is also on the go. So the constellations are always moving and changing. Pisces and the First Point of Aries are a great example of this.

    It may not be as wide as the universe, but Pisces constellation astronomy has enough to keep anyone interested for a long time.

    Hot Water on a Hot Jupiter

    For years, astronomers have been searching for water in our Solar System and beyond it. Water is essential for life, and NASA regards the search for life as one of its major activities. Recently astronomers using the Spitzer Space Telescope detected signs of water on planet HD 189733b, a gas giant or hot Jupiter 63 light years from Earth. Its atmosphere also contains carbon dioxide and methane.

    Carl Grillmair of the Spitzer Science Center in Pasadena, California, and his colleagues reported their find in a letter published in the journal Nature. They used the ’secondary eclipse’ method to distinguish between infrared light coming from the planet and from its sun.

    They probably also detected signs of weather on HD 189733b. The planet orbits its sun closer than Jupiter so chances of finding signs of life are rather slim.

    In astronomy, “Goldilocks Zone” refers to a region of space where life could potentially be possible. The name comes from the children’s story “Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. ” Lost in a forest, Goldilocks finds shelter in a hut and discovers three bowls of porridge. She tastes the first and finds that it is too hot. The second bowl is too cold, but the third is just right.

    Also known as “habitable zones”, these Goldilocks regions seem to be rare in the universe. Carl Sagan was known for describing Earth as a pale blue dot. However, Guillermo Gonzales and Jay Richards wrote a book called The Privileged Planet to refute Sagan’s thesis that our planet is not special.

    Astronomers have found over 300 exoplanets or planets outside our Solar System. They have yet to find a system that would correspond to ours. In most cases, giant hot Jupiters orbit very close to their sun. Goldilocks would find these places far too hot.

    In other words, it seems that Gonzales and Richards were right. Earth is a privileged planet.
