For years it was outside the Confucian Temple of the city. Almost in the center there is a small circular indentation to the northwest of the star Tien Kuan in the constellation of Taurus as we know it today. This star does not exist but with new technology we know what they wanted to tell us. The explosion of a star in the year 1054, a Supernova.
For more than a year the star could be seen and it was recorded in the annals of the Sung dynasty. As bright as the planet Jupiter it could be seen in day time. This phenomena was not recorded in Europe but the reason for this is unknown. What is interesting is the series of events that took place around the time.
The Astrological Connection
Spirituality was not creating a field of harmony. In fact the converse was true. It was the church that was splitting in two. The Eastern and Western divisions of the Catholic Church reached a point of total disaffection. Barely two weeks after the star exploded, had the Roman Pope Leo IX formally excommunicated the Patriarch Michael Cerularius and the entire Eastern Church. The reason was the wording of the Apostles Creed. Astrology, seen as a danger for the church was in the mind of many but to make such a connection at such a time was not worth your life. The break between Rome and Constantinople, known as the Great Schism did happen, but did the exploding star announced the time?
Crab Nebula
The Supernova is also significant because it is the sight of the Crab Nebula. So the Crab Nebula was born in 1054 and also has the number M1 in the Messier catalogue. Unlike the 1006 blast, the Crab is visible in optical telescopes as well.
The death of a star is again the birth of a nebula. Today the neutron star in the center of the gaseous remnant is all that is left of the original star. The previous supernova was in 1006 and the next would be in 1181.
